Official Dutch acceptance criteria (Fotomatrix Model 2020)
These are the exact criteria of the Rijksdienst voor Identiteitsgegevens for photos in Dutch travel and identity documents. The same numbers as on our Dutch page.
Size & composition
Photo 35 × 45 mm (w × h), head fully visible and centred. Face width from ear root to ear root between 16 and 20 mm. Height from chin to crown: minimum 26 mm and maximum 30 mm from age 11, minimum 19 mm and maximum 30 mm up to and including age 10. Head straight and facing the camera, not turned or tilted, shoulders square.
Background & lighting
Grey, light blue or white is allowed, plain and single-coloured without gradient. We shoot on plain light grey because it gives the most contrast with head and contour. Lighting is even across face and background: no under- or overexposure, no shadows, no reflection or white spots from skin, jewellery or accessories.
Expression & face
Neutral expression, mouth closed, no smile, no visible teeth. Eyes open, fully visible, on one horizontal line and looking straight into the lens. The ears themselves need not be visible, but the sides of the face must not be covered.
Glasses
We always shoot your photo without glasses. The Fotomatrix Model 2020 allows glasses in theory only if eyes, eyebrows and facial contours remain fully visible. In practice glasses hide or distort the biometric data the authority and document reader need to match, so the photo gets rejected. Without glasses is the safe route to approval.
Photo quality & print
The photo is no more than 6 months old at the time of application, in colour, a true likeness and sharp, with sufficient contrast and natural colours. No copy, not edited, undamaged. Printed on high-quality, smooth photo paper with an optical quality of at least 400 dpi. On the document the photo appears in black and white; in the chip it is stored in colour.
Exceptions
Three exceptions apply. Head covering is allowed for religious or philosophical reasons, provided it is plain, single-coloured and contrasts with the background. For children under 6 minimum requirements apply and any support must not be visible in the photo. For objectively established physical or medical reasons a signed statement from a qualified doctor or medical institution may be required.
Full criteria in Dutch: pasfoto-eisen.
Frequently asked questions
Is your question not listed? Send us an email or feel free to drop by. We are happy to help.
Do I need an appointment for a passport photo?
No appointment is needed. Walk in during opening hours and you are usually helped within 5 minutes.
Which documents can I use these photos for?
Our photos meet the official ICAO/RDW standards used for the Dutch passport, ID card, residence permit (IND / verblijfsvergunning), driver's licence and BSN registration. They are also accepted for most non-Dutch passports, US visas, Schengen visas, UK passports and Indian OCI/passport applications.
How much does a passport photo cost?
€ 14.95 for a set of official passport photos, printed and ready to take with you. Digital delivery is available on request.
Can I wear glasses on the photo?
No. We always shoot your photo without glasses. The Fotomatrix Model 2020 allows glasses in theory only if eyes, eyebrows and facial contours remain fully visible. In practice glasses hide or distort the biometric data the authority and document reader need to match, so the photo gets rejected. No glasses is the safe route to approval.
Can I wear a headscarf or other head covering?
Yes, for religious or medical reasons. Your face must stay fully visible from chin to forehead, the sides of your face must not be covered and no shadow may fall across your face.
Do you also make photos for US visa or Indian passport / OCI?
Yes. We shoot in the correct format and background for the US Department of State (2×2 inch, white background), Indian passport / OCI (51×51 mm, white background) and other embassy formats. Just tell us the country when you walk in.
How fast can I get the photos?
In under 5 minutes. You walk out with the printed photos, and a digital copy can be sent to you the same day if your document requires an online upload.
Can you also submit my Dutch driver's licence renewal digitally?
Yes. If you are registered with a Dutch municipality (BSN + DigiD), we take the photo and deliver it digitally for your online renewal for € 19.95. You finish the application yourself on rdw.nl with your DigiD. Your gemeente lets you know within 2 to 5 working days.
Where are you located?
Martinus Nijhofflaan 16, in shopping centre De Hoven, Delft. Free parking for the first 3 hours right in front of the shop, and a short bus or tram ride from Delft Central Station.
